What supplements should I take to stay healthy?

I don't play competitive sports anymore, but I want to keep up my body. What supplements should I take to stay healthy? I've retired from competitive swimming, but I'm still in the pool most mornings. I have a great diet and an active lifestyle. Now that I'm in my 50s, I want to stay on top of my game. What supplements are right for me?

A: Dear Jessica,

Middle-aged athletes need to take care of themselves. As we age, our bodies are less forgiving. Many athletes in their 50s struggle with weight gain, joint problems, and loss of focus. Working out isn't as easy as it used to be. We just don't feel the power we once had.

Thankfully, the right diet, sleep, exercise, and supplements can keep us in the game. Here are my top-three supplement recommendations for most middle-aged athletes:

●      Creatine - One of the most popular athletic supplements, creatine is also one of the best. It improves exercise performance, giving you a boost in the gym and on the track. It reduces your risk of sports injuries and may protect you from diabetes. Creatine seems to improve thinking and memory, reducing your risk of brain diseases like Parkinson's. Athletes with concussions seem to improve with creatine.

●      Vitamin D - You may not have enough vitamin D, particularly in the winter. Athletes need vitamin D for strong bones, heart, lungs, and muscles. It might even help protect you from certain viruses (hint, hint)!

●      Turmeric - This flavorful herb will help keep you healthy in middle age and beyond. It reduces inflammation and boosts the brain. It may reduce your risk of depression, heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Since it's tough to absorb turmeric, be sure to eat it with some black pepper.
