Dr. Charlop discusses athletes and depression on ABC

In Washington, ABC interviews Gregory Charlop, MD, about athletes, depression, and steps we can all take to improve our mental health. He discussed the B.E.A.T method to defeat depression and anxiety. Without pills or drugs, here’s how folks in his telemedicine clinic battle depression:

  • Bedtime - Sleep 7-8 hours/day and get tested for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Football players are particularly at risk for sleep apnea. All athletes suffer from sleep loss when traveling to away games.

  • Eating - A Mediterranean diet heavy in olive oil, fish, nuts, and turmeric will reduce depression symptoms. Fortunately, this can also be a powerful diet to boost sports performance.

  • Activity - Regular, moderate exercise. Avoid public gyms during the pandemic. Spend more time in nature and try socially distant running groups.

  • Telemedicine and therapy - Find a telehealth therapist from the comfort of your living room. Some therapists specialize in helping athletes. No need to drive to the doctor’s office!

Athletes are particularly at risk for depression during the pandemic. It's already happening. Canceled games, limited practice, and empty stadiums take a toll on mental health. Changes in the NBA, NFL, and MLB isolate athletes from fans and each other. We must work together to find solutions for our sports leaders.
